I am in my third season of Blood Bowl at my FLCG and this time playing basic humans. As I face off against those Strength 4 and beasites what advice could I give to shore up a line from being weak and being bull dozed off the pitch? Most teams shore up the line with strength 4 bruisers that find it often times getting 2 dice rolls to decide the fate of their opponent. Many players will have to counter with Blitzers and their block skill to try their best to stop these big boys. However their is a nice wrinkle to that strategy that has shown time and time again to be effective. The Guard Skill. This skill allows you to give an assist even if you are in an opposing tackle zone. This leads to your opponent having to block the Guard skill player first rather than the other choice. Seems simple enough, but what it does is require an equal amount of players to break your line than it did before.
Yes, having the block skill avoids knock down result but it's the Guard skill that changes your opponents strategy that makes it more valuable when having the opportunity to purchase. Also note every opposing Blitzer has block which means getting a block skill doesn't give your lineman any real advantage over him but a guard skill will give another player 2 dice to block him despite the tightness of the line between teams. That Guard skill often is the start to the chain reaction of 2 dice block down the line for it to break your opponent down. Plus Guard is effective immediately when the player stands back up.
So when given the chance choose Guard first, then block. It is often the best choice for a Big Un' as they don't get access to General Skills and with the Bone Ead' , Stupid, or Wild Animal roll if you do nothing that's a strength 5 Guard helping those Line mates around him.
Now if you have players that are rising well Block and Mighty Blow are two great follow upskills that quickly pay dividends. Another good one is Stand Firm. This will keep your Guard where you designed it and can continue it's havoc. Another great one is Dauntless. This skill is a quick equalizer to the Big Un's and often surprises opponents when a small player knocks down their Big Player.
Hope this help League players!
